Impact Players

Most organizations have them. Maybe you are one - an impact player; an individual contributor who steps up and leads without specific direction or mandate to do so. The influence and performance of impact players contributes to the organization’s advancement and progress toward ambitious goals. Impact players eat challenges for breakfast -  changes and obstacles become opportunities for learning and growth. As organizations face increasingly complex challenges inside and outside their firms, so too does the need for these kinds of individuals who can self-manage to drive influence and impact.

The high-stakes work of air traffic controllers is a strong demonstration of this idea. Every day at NAV Canada, licensed controllers manage the safe and efficient flow of traffic through 18 million square kilometers of Canada’s civil airspace. These individuals make decisions amid dynamic, ever-changing landscapes on a consistent basis; every hour, every day. This work demands self-managed contributors who can reliably make confident decisions amid ambiguity and complexity.

In addition to rigorous on-the-job training that prospective controllers complete, candidates also have access to performance coaching that helps to accelerate their skill acquisition and successful candidacy. For Jeff, working with SCP performance coaches enabled him to increase his ability to adeptly navigate ambiguity in order for him to achieve his license and take on the demands of the role. In a job that is all about navigating competing priorities surrounded by ever-changing variables, Jeff needed the mental fortitude and discipline to see clearly, move quickly and resiliently adapt, on repeat. Working with SCP performance coaches was invaluable to him achieving his successful license and thriving in his role.

At SCP, we're on a mission to empower global leaders of tomorrow, helping them master being the best at getting better, for them to have more impact as they pursue long-term goals. SCP performance coaches activate the Clarity-Practice-Grit performance coaching system in their work with impact players and individual leaders. We believe that leadership is everywhere and it’s not exclusive to teams or leaders leading teams. Leadership of self, especially for impact players forging their own course is increasingly valuable in today’s complex world.

Do you have an audacious, long-term goal? Without being specifically asked, do you contribute with what you have to help move the effort of your firm or team forward? Maybe you’re a role player off the bench who's been actively engaged in the strategy and energy of the plays so that when you hit the floor, you target specific opportunities and influence play.

As an impact player, you may not be the loudest voice in the room, though when required, you capture attention and gain consensus to move action forward. As an impact player, you may not be the most talented or proficient in the group, though with intention and consistency, you deliver remarkable results. As an impact player, you lean forward in ready-position, without being asked,  to take on the next challenge.

At SCP, we can help to accelerate your readiness, performance and results.

High impact players take charge of situations, of their work, of their leaders and of situations. They exercise agency and take control.
